As we look to the future of HCI, one of our goals
must be to continue to
develop HCI as a field by reaching
out to professionals within HCI or related disciplines who are not yet
regular participants in the CHI conferences. To extend the reach of the CHI
conference, ACM SIGCHI has created the HCI development consortium to encourage the
interaction between the existing CHI community and focused groups of professionals
who have not yet established close links to the CHI conference.
Each year, the SIGCHI executive committee, in association with the conference committee, will select a specific community to broaden the audience of the conference and thereby benefit the field of HCI. ACM SIGCHI and CHI 98 would like to invite teachers of grades 4-12 who are attempting to utilize computers as an educational tool within their classrooms to participate in the CHI 98 Development Consortium. This event provides an opportunity for teachers to contribute to how computers are being used in educational settings and how HCI research and development might improve the use of computers in the classroom. FormatThe Development Consortium will bring the teachers together with HCI professionals in a workshop-style environment to discuss ideas about how the use of computers in education can be improved. Discussions will be facilitated, and notes will be taken to record the ideas and discussions. These notes will be the basis for a SIGCHI Bulletin article to report on the Development Consortium and to provide ideas and input for future research directions in this area.Submission ProcessTeachers should submit two-page position papers outlining their ideas on impediments to the use of computers in the classroom, focusing specifically on issues related to the interaction between students and computers, and how improvements might be made in order to improve the use of computers as an educational tool. Submissions will be reviewed on the basis of their potential to impact the field of HCI, and on the basis of the potential for their CHI conference experience to be a positive experience for the teacher. Accepted position papers may be published in the CHI 98 Summary.Electronic VersionElectronic versions of accepted Development Consortium position papers will be published in the CHI 98 Electronic Publication.Upon AcceptanceApplicants to the consortium will be notified of acceptance by the end of November, 1997.Authors of accepted proposals will receive an Author Kit with detailed instructions on how to submit camera-ready and electronic materials for publication. These materials are due on 2 January 1998. Accepted participants will receive complimentary registration to the CHI conference, the opportunity to attend CHI tutorials on a space-available basis and a chance to interact with HCI professionals to learn about the field of human-computer interaction. We believe this experience will enhance the teacher's ability to effectively and efficiently teach (giving them the skills to assess effective and efficient teaching tools and supplements) and the HCI community's understanding of the real world of teaching and education in grades 4-12. ChecklistPlease follow the steps in this checklist to ensure completeness in your submission.
