Years ago, the discipline of HCI consisted mainly of the study of people interacting with computers to manipulate data in order to accomplish some extrinsic task-usually a job-related task. Although that paradigm remains a valid approach to HCI, the last few years have seen a rapid rise in multimedia games and the overwhelming adoption of the Internet as a means to communicate with others, either directly through email or indirectly through newsgroups and Web sites. More and more people are interacting with computers and have no explicit task objectives i.e., they are interacting just for fun. In addition, computers are being used increasingly to facilitate human-to-human communication.

We face new challenges as interacting with computers is no longer just for the extrinsic rewards - the accomplishment of a task, but also for the intrinsic rewards - the satisfaction we obtain from our leisure activities, for fun and for the intellectual, social and emotional rewards obtained through relating with others.

How do we design for compelling interfaces - for fun, for engaging aesthetics and characters in our entertainment media? What is the impact on our computing environment - our equipment, the location where the interaction takes place and the companions who may be with us - with the broadening emphasis on communication today? Increasingly, our interface designs need to accommodate group, not just individual, interactions and must enhance our social and leisure experiences.

CHI 98 invites submissions on these issues, as well as the design, development and evaluation process and their tools for entertainment media user interfaces and submissions on particular media issues such as animation, images, audio and virtual reality in entertainment or leisure activities.

Topics dealing with HCI-related issues on interactive TV and Web TV, entertainment on the Internet, gaming, edutainment, multimedia entertainment interfaces, computer animated video and digital audio are encouraged.

Please contact the Application Domain Chair if you have questions about a possible area domain submission to any of the technical program participation categories. Please contact the Mentoring Liaison if you would like a mentor to help you with your application domain submission for CHI 98.
